Eja Tuhan

HOW DO YOU SPELL GOD?

What is God? Is He the Supreme Spirit Who alone exists of Himself and is infinite in al perspections? Since Allan Watts said, in the West, Ultimate Reality is based in the ‘word of God’ as it has been handed down to mankind as part of mythology. In which humans are the creations of a mighty Father image, symbolic of the power of heaven. Perhaps that is why Karen Armstrong felt like James Joyce in searching for the meaning of belief and faith in God, that someone ever suggested to Joyce that is God-term should be a pier, rather than a bridge of pilgrimages, for a pier is a bridge that goes nowhere. All religions would agree that it is impossible to describe the transcendent meaning of God. Karen said that God has no objection meaning. Especially history has told as that each generation has to create the image of God that works for it, and the same is time with atheism. The statement, ‘I do not believe in God’ has meant something different at each period of history. Therefore, what is a God while His words have shaped the history of human culture? It still remains a mystery. But a mystery is not a deadlock.

Karen Armstrong gave a very interesting final statement by saying, ‘We have to decide whether the word “God” has any meaning for us today.’ This statement reminds me of Marilyn Manson who had a tour and asked the audience to spelled the word ‘GOD.’ He said, ‘How do you spell ‘GOD’?” and together with his audience, he spelled, “D…R…U…G. Drugs!!!” So, now we know that Manson spelled ‘GOD’ as ‘DRUG.’ Well, I have no right to say that Manson was wrong, but it shows us that even the word ‘God’ can be spelled different from the visual reality. Since His Words have changed and shaped our culture, custom, and attitude, perhaps the word ‘God’ still has its meaning. Otherwise, people won’t say, “Oh God!” or “So help me God!”, etc. Though our mind will always go back and forth asking, ‘Which GOD of the many offered do we subscribe to?’ []
